Job 1-2
humanity- in 1-2 of Job, it tells us that some people have it better than others. Job is rich, has a big family, and is considered to be the best person you could find. it’s trying to say that if you’re a good person, good things will happen to you, but obviously that’s not the case.
God- it’s trying to conveying the message that God favors Job, and how he shows him off to Satan, saying he’s the best and nothing will make him sin. it seems like the author is trying to say God is unsure of himself, letting Satan curse Job and his family to show how strong he really is.
relationships- it seems that God and Satan have a somewhat casual relationship. Satan meets with God, and they have normal conversations about Job. it doesn’t portray how we ususally think of the two, completely opposite and not agreeing on things. they seem to both think that cursing Job is a good idea, to put his faith to the test.
Job and his family- Job has sons and daughters, but obviously favors the sons more. he doesn’t trust his children, so he sacrifices things every morning, thinking that they might have sinned, and hoping that God will forgive them. when his family dies, his wife says to just curse God and die, and Job says that that’s a foolish thing to say. this is all you hear of the wife in chapters 1-2, so i’m thinking she’s not highly respected, like most women in those times.

animal farm. pigs. totalitarianism.
last year, i was definitely subjected to the pigs, and i don’t put that in ” ” ’s because that’s exactly what my friends were last year. at the beginning of the year, it was great. we all got along, and you could say we all seemed “equal”. then, after about 3 months, my so-called “best friend” started becoming BFF’S!! with the girl we HATED the year before, who somehow became our friend again, (beings friends with her, i didn’t mind). after this happened, if i wanted my friend to even speak to me, let alone hang out with me, i had to do what they did, listen to what they listened to, be JUST LIKE THEM. and i hated it, but i did it. i did it because i was desperate, and she was my best friend, and i felt like i was losing her. these two, and their other BFFE!! thought they were the best, and that they could control everything and everyone they were around, and they did for a while. i did some stupid things last year, all because i felt like i had to, like they were controlling me. then i FINALLY realised that i was being an idiot and i didn’t have to conform to what they wanted. i regained my ability to actually think for myself, and it felt good. obviously, i’m different this year. i don’t take any crap from anyone, and i do my own thing.
the other people i feel try to control our lives is the teachers (sorry, i know you’ve heard this about three hundred times). they expect us to follow their every instruction, and if we don’t, they give us one of those lovely demerits or call our mommy’s. a lot of the time, they will give us very little instruction on what to do, and expect us to do it right or else fail the course. they threaten us, saying that if we don’t do well on a certain project or paper, we WILL fail the class, we WILL get permanent work detail, and we WILL get kicked out of the school. this doesn’t seem like it would give us much confidence to move forward now, does it? and they seem that they want to change their mind very often, without letting the students know. they will argue for as long as it takes for us to give in, saying that they told us it changed, and their the teacher, they can do whatever they want, when in reality, every student agrees that this never happened. we’re expected to listen to them and trust that every single word that comes out of their mouths is the truth. they treat us like stupid kids, saying “oh, you don’t know what it’s like, this is exactly how life is going to be”, giving us no room for creativity and imagination. i don’t know about you, but i’m hoping that this isn’t exactlylike life, and that there’s at least one job out there that let’s me use my brain once in a while. they claim to know what it’s like to be kids, but most of them are 40 plus years old, and i’m pretty sure that life was a teeny bit different back then…. we have a lot of freedom at our school right now, and i know even back 3 years ago, it was even more relaxed. the teachers and administrators keep getting stricter and enforcing more policies against us, and i know i don’t want my school to end up like vero high, but i’m afraid it might just be getting to that point very soon. we aren’t dumb. yes, sometimes we do stupid things and make rash decisions, but we aren’t mindless gerbils forced to run around a wheel all day. we are living, breathing, thinking, human beings, even if teachers won’t accept that.
my solution to this growing epidemic is to just do your own thing, no one can dictate what you can or cannot do (except maybe your mommy and daddy). you have a mind of your own, and you are able to think for yourself, but we are being brainwashed by the man to give up our minds and imagination, and listen to the leaders, because of course, they know everything….you don’t have to follow the pigs to survive, being your own self can get you much further in life.
conforming is for squares.

trial
the trial last week was pretty intense. i liked when the people who were debating or being cross examined got all emotional and into the whole thing. like travis. and i also liked when amanda and luis debated about charlotte’s web. they were pretty emotional about a pig.
thats pretty much all i liked. i think most people were extremely stressed out about it, and it was a lot of work, especially since our class is smaller, so each person had more work than the other class. also, we found out about a lot of things the week before the trial, so we had to do more than expected. it would have been good to maybe have an extra week. except, some people might not have made it through another week without having a nervous breakdown or something. yea.
overall, i think it was a good idea to start with, but we could have changed it a little to make it less stressful on us.

ch 6-9 (1/31)
mr. amico — Why do you think mockingbirds are a central metaphor of the book? What do you think they represent? Explain what you think this quote means: “Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it.
“Your father’s right,” she said. “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
MY TURN — i think the mockingbird sort of represents innocence and purity. it shows how you shouldn’t harm people who are innocent, because they havn’t done anything to anybody, and it’s a sin to try and hurt them. the mockingbird is big in the book because back in the 30’s, the white people tried to degrade the black people as much as possible, even if they knew they were innocent, so Atticus is defending one because he knows it’s the right thing to do. he’s trying to show his children not to follow the norm if they know it’s not right, even if they get down-sized and made fun of by everyone else.
by the way….i got my bass today. :]

tkam — tom/ mayella (2/14)
Mayella Ewell and Tom Robinson are more alike than most people in Maycomb would like to believe. They are both considered trash in the community, and are both abused in some way. People consider the Ewells trash because they live near the black community and the dump, and they don’t have many social skills. Tom is a black man, so white people automatically consider him trash. Mayella is abused by her father, and is forced to do most of the work in the house by herself, because none of her siblings will help her. Tom is also abused, by the people in Maycomb, because he was accused of raping a white woman, which is unspeakable.
However, even though they are somewhat alike, they are still very unalike in some ways. The most obvious reason is that Mayella is white, and Tom is black. Even if the Ewells are not the most highly respected family in the town, they are still considered to be better than the black people. Tom, even though not accepted by the white community, is still acknowledged by the blacks. Mayella, on the other hand, is considered strange, and is offended when people are polite to her, because she thinks they are mocking her.
It seems that Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewell are more alike than the citizens of Maycomb think. They do have some differences, but in the end, they are both abused and thought of as outcasts in the town. They both find some comfort in one another, even though they don’t want to admit it.

scout in a mob (sequel to snakes on a plane) 2/7
I think that this might be possible, because Scout is only eight years old, and usually adults feel disappointed when they make a bad example in front of children. Scout is this innocent little girl, and she goes up to her dad like there’s nothing wrong. She starts talking to Mr. Cunningham about his son, and he sees this daughter and father standing together, so he thinks about how he would feel if he was in Atticus’ position at the moment. He calls the mob off because he feels guilty of letting this child see how even the people you think are friends can turn against you.
Through the book, Scout has grown, but not necessarily matured. She did not realize the people surrounding Atticus were different from the people from the other night who came to the house. But, since she still has her naïve childhood spirit, she believes everyone has good in them, so she stays there. She really doesn’t understand racism, since Calpurnia has been with them their whole lives. She doesn’t know why people call Atticus a nigger-lover like it’s bad, since she doesn’t think black people are bad.
When Scout asks Atticus what rape is, he tries to avoid the subject by saying it’s “carnal knowledge of a female by force and without consent”. Obviously, she is too young to understand what this means, but Atticus just wants to get the question out of the way. He wants to protect Scout’s innocence, and he thinks if she knew what it was, she might mature faster, and have to deal with worse situations earlier on in life than she has to, even though the kids are abruptly thrown into a world of prejudice, ignorance, sexual assault, and hatred of human beings. It shows how confusing the adult world can be to a child, and Atticus doesn’t want his children thinking everyone in the world is bad. I think later in the book, when the trial has already begun, Scout will finally have to mature to deal with the situations she is living with.

Part Uno. to kill a mockingbird (1/22)
On your own blog leave a post disussing the childhood world of Jem, Scout, and Dill and their relationship with Boo Radley in Part One. Do you have any idea what role Boo Radley is going to play in the book? Do you think that he is representative of anything?
jem, scout, and dill make up little play like mini drama things about what they thing boo radley is like. they want to get him to come out of his house, but are also afraid of seeing him. i think he’s going to help the children learn about what’s right and wrong, and help them understand how everyone is equal, even if you black or locked up in a house….i have know idea what he might represent, except maybe a mockingbird, because its a sin to kill them because they don’t harm anyone, and it’s like boo is dead because he’s locked up in his house.

to kill a mockingbird
To Kill a Mockingbird is about racism during the Depression in the 1930’s. These three kids, uhh, Scout, Jem, and their friend Dill try to talk to some guy in some haunted house next door to them. But Jem and Scout’s dad, Atticus Finch, (there are the coolest names in this book) stops them. The children make a sort of mini drama about Boo Radley’s life, which they act out daily. They start getting little presents in this hole in a tree, and they try to figure our who it is. Then, Atticus starts defending this black guy named Tom Robinson, whose accused of raping a white woman. The Finch family is criticized because their town Maycomb is heavily racist. Jem and Scout are taunted by the other children, and at Christmas, Scout beats up her relative for saying Atticus ruined the family name by defending a black man. The night before the trial, people want to hurt Tom, and threating Atticus, but Scout’s innocence stops them. In the trial, the evidence is in Tom’s favor, but the jury pronounces him guilty. When he tries to escape, he’s shot to death. Then, the white girls dad tries to kill Jem and Scout, but Boo stabs him and saves the children. To Kill a Mockingbird is about good and evil. In a conflicting situation, good usually prevails. The children are disappointed with the turn out of the trial, because Tom was obviously innocent. They believed that their townspeople would know what was right, but they ended up convicting him anyway. It is also about racism, because in the thirties blacks were still treated badly. Even thought Tom Robinson is innocent, he’s accused of rape because he is against a white family. So…..that’s about it I suppose.
