to kill a mockingbird

January 21, 2007

To Kill a Mockingbird is about racism during the Depression in the 1930’s. These three kids, uhh, Scout, Jem, and their friend Dill try to talk to some guy in some haunted house next door to them. But Jem and Scout’s dad, Atticus Finch, (there are the coolest names in this book) stops them. The children make a sort of mini drama about Boo Radley’s life, which they act out daily. They start getting little presents in this hole in a tree, and they try to figure our who it is. Then, Atticus starts defending this black guy named Tom Robinson, whose accused of raping a white woman. The Finch family is criticized because their town Maycomb is heavily racist. Jem and Scout are taunted by the other children, and at Christmas, Scout beats up her relative for saying Atticus ruined the family name by defending a black man. The night before the trial, people want to hurt Tom, and threating Atticus, but Scout’s innocence stops them. In the trial, the evidence is in Tom’s favor, but the jury pronounces him guilty. When he tries to escape, he’s shot to death. Then, the white girls dad tries to kill Jem and Scout, but Boo stabs him and saves the children. To Kill a Mockingbird is about good and evil. In a conflicting situation, good usually prevails. The children are disappointed with the turn out of the trial, because Tom was obviously innocent. They believed that their townspeople would know what was right, but they ended up convicting him anyway. It is also about racism, because in the thirties blacks were still treated badly. Even thought Tom Robinson is innocent, he’s accused of rape because he is against a white family. So…..that’s about it I suppose.
